    예술의 발전에는 자연의 법칙과 같은 것이 있다. 어떤 양식, 생활방법, 세계관은 설정되고 탐구되고 궁극적 가능성에까지 발전되는데, 이 가능성이 끝날 때 새로운 방법, 또는 새로운 양식의 필요가 느껴지고, 이러한 것의 시발점은 많든 적든 돌발적, 충동적으로 나타난다.

    그러나 근본적인 변화 그 자체가 갑자기 생기는 것은 아니다. 눈으로 보이게 되기 이전부터 그것은 지면 아래 숨어서 잠시 동안 얌전하게 생장하고 때로는 이전시대에까지 거슬러 올라가 뿌리를 뻗쳐있다.

    새로운 시대는 이전시대에 대해서 심하게 대립하지만 역  그것의 지손이라는 것을 부정하지는 못한다. 몇 세대동안 어떤 표준에 따라서 생활하고 관습을 만들어내고 부를 축적한 오랜 가문에서 불 수 있는 것과 매우 비슷한 것이 여기에서도 생긴다.

    즉, 착실하고 견고한 생활의 리듬이 내부적인 쇠약이나 강한 외부로부터의 힘에 의해서 정점에 다다르고, 이어서 종말의 때가 오고야 마는 것이다. 그리고 최후에는 가족 가운데 한 가지가 낡은 관습을 뛰쳐나와, 거기서부터 앞날이 망하는가 전혀 보잘것없는 것이 되는가 또는 새로운 번영을 이룩하는가 하는 것을 알지 못한 채, 아무튼 새로운 인생행로를 시작하는 것이다.

    이렇게 본다면 바흐에게서도 역시 새로운 예술의 씨가 보여진다. 아마 그 자신은 후세의 새로운 종속의 싹이 되게끔 운명 지워진, 이를테면 부수적인 요소에는 주의를 하지 않았음에 틀림없다. 이러한 일은 과거를 돌이켜 볼 때에만 눈에 띄는 것인데, 바흐 자신은 그의 예술 가운데서 어떤 면이 장래에 중요한 의미를 가지게 될 것인가를 생각해 보지는 않았을 것이다. 그것은 새롭게 육성된 예술을 낡은 양식과 비교하고 몇 개의 뚜렷한 특징을 근원까지 거슬러 올라가서 조사할 수 있는 후세의 관찰자에게만 밝혀지는 일이다.

    There is something like the law of nature in the development of art. Certain styles, lifestyles, and worldviews are established, explored, and developed into the ultimate possibility. At the end of this possibility, a new method or new style is felt, and the starting point of these things appears sudden and impulsive, whether many or few.

    However, fundamental changes themselves do not occur all of a sudden. Before it can be seen by the naked eye, it hides under the ground, grows quietly for a while, and sometimes stretches its roots back to the previous era.

    The new era is fiercely opposed to the previous era, but it cannot be denied that it is its descendant. Something very similar to what can be called in an old family that has lived according to certain standards, created customs, and accumulated wealth for generations occurs here as well.

    In other words, the rhythm of a steady and solid life should not be peaked by internal weakness or strong external forces, and the time for the end should not come. And eventually, one of the family members starts a new course of life without knowing whether the future will collapse or become insignificant or whether it will lead to new prosperity.

    Bach also shows a new seed of art. Perhaps he did not pay attention to the incidental elements that were destined to become the seed of a new subordinate to future generations. Bach himself may not have considered which aspects of his art will have significant meaning in the future, which is something that only stands out when he looks back on the past. It is only revealed to future observers who can compare newly cultivated art with old styles and investigate several distinct characteristics back to the source.
