핵심 속으로 파고들어야 한다.(You have to dig into the core.)

    원하는 일이 어떤 것이든 최고의 성공을 원한다면 접근방법은 늘 같은 방식이어야 한다.

    핵심 속으로 파고들어야 한다. '파고든다는 것'은 곧 자신이 할 수 있는 다른 모든 일을 무시하고 반드시 해야만 하는 일에만 집중하는 것을 뜻한다. 또한 모든 일의 중요 성이 똑같지 않음을 인식하고, 가장 중요한 일을 찾아내는 것이다. 이 것은 자신이 '하는' 일과 자신이 '원하는' 일을 연결 짓는 아주 단호한 방식이기도 하다. 탁월한 성과는 당신의 초점(focus)을 얼마나 좁힐 수 있느냐와 밀접하게 연결되어 있다.

    자신의 일과 삶에서 최대한 많은 것을 얻어 내려면 최대한 파고들어야 한다.

    우리에게 주어진 시간과 에너지는 한정되어 있다. 그것을 너무 넓게 펼치려 애쓰다 보면 노력은 종잇장처럼 얇아진다. 사람들은 일의 양에 따라 성과가 점점 더 쌓이기를 바라는데, 그렇게 하려면 '더하기'가 아닌 '빼기'가 필요하다. 더 큰 효과를 얻고 싶다면 일의 가짓수를 줄여야 한다.

    한 가지에 파고드는 것은 남다른 성과를 내기 위한 간단한 방법이다. 게다가 효과도 좋다. 언제든, 어디에서든, 어떤 경우에서든 통한다. 왜일까? 단 하나의 목적의식, 궁극적으로 본인이 원하는 곳까지 도달한다는 단 하나의 목표만을 갖게 하기 때문이다.

    핵심을 파고들게 되면 단 하나만을 바라보게 된다. 그게 가장 중요하다. 성공은 연속하여 쌓인다. 단, 한 번에  하나씩이다.^[각주:1]
