지휘자, 오케스트라 그리고 음악(Conductors, orchestras, and music)

    반세기 전과 비교해 보면 오늘날 지휘자들은 현장에서 벌어지는 상황을 순화해서 말한다. 그리고 오케스트라는 거장의 신화를 예전만큼 믿지 않는다. 청중도 마찬가지다. 하지만 오케스트라 공연을 대표하는 간판은 여전히 필요하다.
 

 
    전능한 정치 지도자가 필요 없는 만큼 지휘자도 이제 필요 없다고 주장하는 사람들조차 이것은 인정한다. 싫든 좋든 우리는 음악가들이 만들어내는 소리와 동작뿐만 아니라 지휘자의 몸짓을 통해서도 오케스트라 연주를 해석한다. 그리고 연주에 대해 말할 때 100명을 가리키는 것보다는 대표적인 한 사람을 내세우는 것이 더 편하다. 그래서 불합리하지만 '유로프스키의 말러' '푸르트벵글러의 베토벤' 같은 표현을 쓴다. 마치 지휘자가 작곡가를 소유하는 듯, 오케스트라 소리를 혼자서 다 책임지는 듯 말이다.
 
    여러분이 만나게 될 지휘자들은 연주를 통해 자아를 드러내기보다는 음악에 봉사하는 것이라고 봐주기를 원한다. 지휘자는 전혀 중요하지 않다. 그러니 자신의 자아를 버려야 한다. 연주할 때 음악과 지휘자, 연주자들 사이에는 부분의 합보다 더 큰 무엇이 일어난다. 이 순간 지휘자는 음악이 그저 자신의 몸속을 흐른다고 생각한다.^[각주:1]

    Conductors today are simply describing what's going on in the field compared to half a century ago. And the orchestra does not believe in the myth of a virtuoso as much as it used to. The same applies to the audience. However, signs representing orchestra performances are still needed.

    Even those who claim that a conductor is no longer needed as an almighty political leader are admitting this. Whether we like it or not, we interpret orchestra performance not only through the sounds and movements that musicians produce but also through the conductors' gestures. When talking about a performance, it is more convenient to refer to a representative person than to refer to 100 people. That is why they use expressions such as "Jurowski's Mahler" and " Furtwängler's Beethoven." It is as if a conductor owns a composer and is in charge of the entire sound of the orchestra alone.

    The conductors you will meet want you to see it as serving the music rather than revealing your ego through performance. Conductors are not important at all. So you have to give up your ego. When playing, something greater than the sum of parts occurs between the music, the conductor, and the performers. At this moment, the conductor thinks that the music just flows through his body.
