점심시간이 약간 지난 시간임에도 불구하고, 식당 앞에는 꽤 많은 사람들이 줄을 서 있었습니다. 젊은 연인, 친구끼리 온 손님들, 그리고 저희처럼 가족 단위 손님들과 함께 캐리어를 끌고 온 외국인 관광객들의 모습도 눈에 띄었습니다. 식당 옆 벽면에는 커다란 세계지도가 붙어 있었는데, 방문한 손님들이 자신의 국적을 표시한 작은 스티커들이 정말 빽빽하게 붙어있는 것을 보고 이곳이 얼마나 많은 사람들에게 사랑받는 곳인지 실감할 수 있었습니다. 

기다리는 동안 식당 메뉴판을 살펴보았습니다. 다양한 종류의 채소와 닭고기, 돼지고기, 해산물 등이 주재료인 스프카레들이 사진과 함께 자세하게 설명되어 있었고, 각 카레마다 독특한 특징이 있는 듯했습니다. 또한, 매운맛의 단계를 세세하게 조절할 수 있다는 점도 좋았습니다. 꽤 오랜 기다림 끝에 드디어 저희 가족 차례가 되어 식당 안으로 들어설 수 있었습니다. 아담한 공간이었지만, 은은하게 빛나는 조명과 나무 소재의 테이블과 의자, 그리고 분주하지만 친절한 직원들의 모습이 따뜻하고 편안한 분위기를 자아냈습니다.

자리에 앉아 저는 딸아이가 강력 추천했던 돼지고기 스프카레를 주문했습니다. 특히 메뉴 사진 속 큼지막한 돼지고기 덩어리와 함께 가지, 호박 등 제가 좋아하는 채소들이 듬뿍 들어있는 모습이 무척 먹음직스러워 보였습니다. 잠시 후, 기다리고 기다리던 스프카레가 커다란 검은 그릇에 담겨 나왔습니다. 밥은 별도의 그릇에 소복하게 담겨 나왔고, 김이 모락모락 피어오르는 스프카레의 비주얼은 정말 압도적이었습니다.

제가 주문한 돼지고기 스프카레는 큼지막하고 부드러워 보이는 돼지고기 덩어리들이 넉넉하게 들어있었고, 함께 들어간 가지는 겉은 살짝 튀겨진 듯했고 속은 부드러웠습니다. 노란 호박은 달콤한 맛을 더했고, 그 외에도 다양한 색깔의 채소들이 보기 좋게 담겨 있었습니다. 국물을 한 숟가락 떠먹는 순간, 깊고 진한 카레의 풍미와 함께 은은한 향신료의 향이 입안 가득 퍼져 나갔습니다. 돼지고기는 오랜 시간 푹 삶아졌는지 입에 넣자마자 부드럽게 녹았고, 촉촉하게 국물이 배어들어 정말 맛있었습니다. 특히 가지는 겉바속촉의 완벽한 식감을 자랑했고, 호박의 달콤함이 매콤한 카레와 환상적인 조화를 이루었습니다. 가족들 역시 자신들이 주문한 스프카레를 연신 "맛있다"라고 칭찬하며 만족스러워하는 모습에 저 또한 기분이 좋았습니다.

Sapporo Culinary Journey: Okushiba Shoten – A Family Find!

Our long-awaited family trip to Sapporo finally began! Filled with excitement, the first place we sought out for lunch upon arriving in Sapporo was 'Okushiba Shoten,' a strong recommendation from my daughter. In fact, this was my first visit to Sapporo, so everything felt new and exciting, marking the beginning of an anticipated journey. My daughter, who had previously traveled to Sapporo, praised Okushiba Shoten's soup curry endlessly, which made me incredibly curious and excited about its taste even before our trip. As someone who enjoys curry, I was even more eager to try it.

Our family visited the Okushiba Shoten Ekimae Sausage branch, conveniently located within easy walking distance from Sapporo Station. The exact address is Hokuren Building B1F Pearl Town, 1-chome, Kita 4 Jonishi, Chuo Ward, Sapporo, Hokkaido 060-0004, Japan. As we walked through the lively atmosphere of Sapporo Station, Okushiba Shoten appeared, with its dark, almost black exterior, a sign with white lettering, and traditional Japanese-patterned noren (fabric curtain) hanging at the entrance.

Even though it was slightly past lunchtime, quite a number of people were still lining up outside the restaurant. There were young couples, groups of friends, and families like ours, along with foreign tourists pulling their luggage. What caught my eye was the large world map on the wall next to the restaurant, densely covered with small stickers placed by visitors marking their countries of origin. Seeing this, I truly realized how much this place is loved by people from all over the world.

While waiting, it was a pleasant experience to browse the menu. Various types of soup curry with vegetables, chicken, pork, and seafood as main ingredients were detailed with appetizing photos, and each curry seemed to have unique characteristics. I also liked that the level of spiciness could be adjusted in fine increments. After a considerable wait, it was finally our family's turn to enter the restaurant. Although the space was compact, the soft lighting, wooden tables and chairs, and the busy yet friendly staff created a warm and comfortable atmosphere.

Once seated, I ordered the pork soup curry, which my daughter had highly recommended. The menu photo showed large, inviting pieces of pork along with plenty of my favorite vegetables like eggplant and pumpkin, making it look incredibly appetizing. A short while later, our eagerly awaited soup curry arrived in a large black bowl. The rice was served separately in a small bowl, and the steaming soup curry presented an truly impressive visual.

My pork soup curry had generous portions of what looked like large, tender pieces of pork. The eggplant, which accompanied the dish, seemed lightly fried on the outside and soft on the inside. The yellow pumpkin added a sweet touch, and various other colorful vegetables were beautifully arranged. Taking a spoonful of the broth, the rich and deep curry flavor, along with the subtle aroma of various spices, filled my mouth. The pork seemed to have been stewed for a long time, melting tenderly as soon as it entered my mouth, thoroughly infused with the broth – truly delicious. The eggplant boasted a perfect crispy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside texture, and the sweetness of the pumpkin created a fantastic harmony with the spicy curry. My family members also continuously praised their own soup curries, expressing their satisfaction, which made me happy too.

Our first lunch at Okushiba Shoten was more than just filling our stomachs; it was a special experience that marked a wonderful beginning to our Sapporo trip. I was grateful to my daughter for introducing us to such a fantastic restaurant, and we enjoyed a happy time sharing delicious food as a family. For me, as a first-time visitor to Sapporo, Okushiba Shoten's soup curry left a strong and positive first impression, greatly increasing my anticipation for the rest of our Sapporo journey.
