소방관의 기도(Firefighter's Prayer)

누가복음 15:4
너희 중에 어떤 사람이 양 백 마리가 있는데 그 중의 하나를 잃으면 아흔아홉 마리를 들에 두고 그 잃은 것을 찾아내기까지 찾아다니지 아니하겠느냐

"Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?"

오늘은 미국의 소방관 스모키 린(A.W. Smokey Linn)이 지은 「소방관의 기도」를 나누며 ‘소방관 아저씨 감사합니다.’라는 주제로 은혜를 나누고자 합니다.

‘하나님, 제가 부름을 받을 때에는 아무리 강렬한 화염 속에서도 한 생명을 구할 수 있는 힘을 저에게 주옵소서. 너무 늦기 전에 어린아이를 감싸 안을 수 있게 하시고 공포에 떠는 노인을 구하게 하옵소서. 저에게는 언제나 안전을 기할 수 있게 하시어 가냘픈 외침까지도 들을 수 있게 하시고, 빠르고 효율적으로 화재를 진압하게 하옵소서. 저의 임무를 충실히 수행케 하시고 제가 최선을 다할 수 있게 하시어, 이웃의 생명과 재산을 보호하게 하소서. 그리고 당신의 뜻에 따라 제 목숨이 다하게 되거든, 부디 은총의 손길로 제 아내와 아이들을 돌보아 주소서.’

미국의 소방관 스모키 린은 아파트 화재 현장에서 어린이 세 명이 있음을 확인했으나 건물주가 설치한 안전장치 때문에 구출하지 못합니다. 심한 자책감과 괴로움 속에 이 시를 씁니다.

이 시는 현재 미국뿐만 아니라 전 세계 소방관들의 복무 신조나 다름없이 쓰이고 있습니다.

2001년 3월에 발생한 홍제동 방화 사건. 그때 순직했던 소방관들 중 한 명인 김철홍 소방관의 책상에도 이 시가 놓여 있었다고 합니다.
방화복 무게 13킬로，마스크와 산소통 무게 12킬로，호스 무게 13킬로，소화기 무게 17킬로，화재진압용 도끼와 쇠 지렛대 무게 13킬로...

소방관들도 당연히 불이 두렵습니다. 그러나 용기를 내어 불에 맞섭니다. 태어날 때부터 용감한 유전자를 가진 것이 아닙니다.

주원 배우가 주연한 영화 「소방관」은 6명의 소방관이 순직한 2001년 서울 홍제동 다세대주택 화재를 소재로 한 영화입니다.
명대사가 있습니다.

“형, 무섭지 않으세요?”
“나도 무서워. 검은 연기 때문에 발 끝도 안 보일 때는 다리가 후들후들 떨려.”
“그럴 땐 무슨 생각 드세요?”
“딱 하나. 내가 여기서 지면, 저 사람은 죽는다.”

신참 소방관 철웅에게 왜 소방관이 되었냐고 묻습니다. 그는 대답합니다. “사람을 구하면서 살 수 있는 자격이요. 세상에서 아무나 가질 수 없는 소중한 자격을 포기할 수가 없었습니다.”

순직한 소방관들. 누가 남아 있을까 봐 불 속으로 뛰어들었다는 것입니다. ‘누가 남아 있을까 봐!’ 이 한 마디가 마음을 울립니다. 연기 속에서, 불꽃 속에서 그들이 구해낸 것은 누군가의 전부였습니다.

누가복음에 보면 선한 목자의 이야기가 나옵니다. 그는 잃어버린 한 마리 양을 찾기 위해 먼 거리를 뛰어갑니다. 이 선한 목자의 심정을 가장 잘 보여주는 것이 소방관들입니다.

아흔아홉 명을 구했어도, 남아 있는 한 사람마저 구하기 위해 화재 현장에서, 산불의 현장에서, 떨어지는 꽃처럼 순직한 소방관들의 유가족들에게 하나님의 위로가 가득하기를 기원합니다.

Today, I would like to share the “Firefighter’s Prayer” written by American firefighter A.W. Smokey Linn, and share grace with the theme of “Thank you, Mr. Firefighter.”

God, when I am called, please give me the strength to save a life even in the midst of intense flames. Please let me embrace a child before it is too late and save an elderly person who is terrified. Please let me always be safe so that I can hear even the faintest cries and put out the fire quickly and efficiently. Please let me faithfully carry out my duty and do my best so that I can protect the lives and property of my neighbors. And when my life comes to an end according to your will, please take care of my wife and children with your grace.

American firefighter Smokey Linn confirmed that there were three children at the scene of an apartment fire, but he could not rescue them because of the safety devices installed by the building owner. He writes this poem with deep self-reproach and pain.

This poem is currently used as a service creed by firefighters not only in the United States but also around the world.

It is said that this poem was on the desk of Kim Cheol-hong, one of the firefighters who died in the Hongje-dong arson incident in March 2001.

The firefighting suit weighed 13 kilograms, the mask and oxygen tank weighed 12 kilograms, the hose weighed 13 kilograms, the fire extinguisher weighed 17 kilograms, and the axe and crowbar for fire suppression weighed 13 kilograms...

Of course, firefighters are afraid of fire. However, they muster up the courage to face the fire. They are not born with brave genes.

The movie "Firefighter" starring Joo Won is a movie based on the 2001 Hongje-dong multi-family house fire in Seoul, in which six firefighters died.

There is a famous line.

"Hyung, aren't you scared?" “I’m scared too. When I can’t even see my feet because of the black smoke, my legs start to tremble.”

“What do you think about then?”
“Just one thing. If I lose here, that person will die.”

Ask rookie firefighter Cheol-woong why he became a firefighter. He answers, “It’s the qualification to live while saving people. I couldn’t give up this precious qualification that not everyone in the world can have.”

The firefighters who died on duty. They jumped into the fire, wondering if anyone would be left behind. “Who would be left behind!” This one phrase resonates with my heart. In the smoke, in the flames, what they saved was someone’s everything.

In the Gospel of Luke, there is a story about the good shepherd. He runs a long distance to find one lost sheep. The firefighters are the ones who best show the heart of this good shepherd.

Even though they saved ninety-nine people, I pray that God’s comfort will be abundant for the bereaved families of the firefighters who died on duty like falling flowers at the scene of a fire or a forest fire, in order to save even the one person who was left behind.
