경건(Godliness)

경건의 모양은 있으나 경건의 능력은 부인하니 이같은 자들에게서 네가 돌아서라
having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.


    우리는 때로 조금 편해보려고 지켜야 할 일을 눈 감고 짐짓 모른 척 저버릴 때가 있습니다. 분리배출 같은 일도 비닐이나 폐품에 묻은 이물질을 잘 제거해서 버리면 재활용이 가능한데, 1분도 채 걸리지 않을 일을 괜한 귀찮음에 슬쩍 그냥 버리기도 합니다. 바다를 떠돌던 폐품들이 하나 둘 모여 어느새 거대한 쓰레기 섬이 되었다는 기사도 남의 일이 아니지요. 일부러, 고의로 하지는 않지만 이 정도는 괜찮겠지라고 생각했던 안이한 태도의 ‘짐짓’이라는 마음이 앞으로 우리 자녀들이 살아갈 미래를 옭아매는 난제가 되어 돌아올지도 모를 일입니다.

    우리의 가벼운 이런 ‘짐짓’이라는 마음과 마주 서 있는 단어는 뭘까요? 문득 ‘경건’이라는 단어가 떠오르는데요, 경건은 거룩한 습관이지요. 삶에서 예수 그리스도로 인해 조금씩 변화해 가는 것을 의미합니다. 그냥 쉽게 넘어가면 아무도 모를 일 앞에서도 한번 쯤은 나를 돌아보는 결단일 겁니다. 어제보다 조금은 정직한 오늘을 살아내는 일이겠지요.

    경건은 삶에서 하나님의 무게를 느끼는 영적 작업입니다. 약간의 손해와 자존심 앞에서도 쉼의 시간을 통해 개입하시는 하나님의 무게를 확인하고 넓혀가는 것입니다. 주님이 우리에게 오늘을 허락하신 이유가 어쩌면 어제의 나보다 더 나은 경건의 모습으로 살기를 기대하시는 건 아닐까요? 마치 우리가 그렇게 삶의 시간을 살아내 주기를 바라시는 것은 아닐까 하는 주님의 마음이 밀려오는 것 같습니다.

    신앙인이라면 살아가면서 우리가 묻고 또 응답해야 하는 것들이 있습니다. 늘 비슷한 하루의 삶에서도 주께서 던지시는 물음에 경건한 마음으로 씨름하는 현장이 되기를 결정하면 좋겠습니다. 우리의 평범한 하루의 시간들이 경건함을 선택하기를 바라시는 주님의 마음으로 삶을 채워가는 결단이 있기를 소망하면서요. 그러고 보니, 또다시 믿음입니다. 살아가면서 내 안의 믿음의 양을 자꾸 점검하는 것이지요.

    경건의 연습은 마치 이런 거와 같다고 할 수 있을 겁니다. 우리 삶에서 지나간 일인데 생채기처럼 남는 일이 있지요. 실수나 부당한 어떤 일로 생긴 것일텐데, 그 일을 뛰어넘으려다 보니 조금은 성장해 있는 나를 발견하는 순간이 있습니다. 우리는 언제나 경건한 삶만을 살아 낼 수는 없겠지요. 짐짓 모른 척 넘기는 일도, 그러다 부끄럽게 드러날 일이 생길지 모르지만 그때마다 다시 경건으로 돌아가려는 몸부림의 흔적은 어느새 경건을 결심한 그 마음을 중심으로 삶의 새로운 결을 이루어 내는 것이라고 생각합니다.

    경건의 능력은 하나님의 말씀을 묵상하고, 그 말씀을 따라 삶을 변화시켜 나가는 능력을 뜻한답니다. 사순절기간, 하나님의 자녀로서, 주님의 제자로서, 십자가의 사랑과 능력을 믿고 따라가는 경건의 능력을 사모하는 귀한 시간이 되면 좋겠습니다.

    Sometimes, we turn a blind eye to things we should be doing in order to make things a little easier and pretend not to know. Even things like separating waste can be recycled if you remove foreign substances from plastic or waste materials and throw them away, but we often just throw them away because it’s a hassle, even though it takes less than a minute. It’s not like someone else’s story to hear about waste materials floating around the ocean gathering one by one and eventually forming a huge garbage island. It’s not something we do on purpose or intention, but our easy-going, “pretending” attitude of thinking that this is okay may come back as a difficult problem that will tie up the future of our children.

    What word comes to mind when we think of this easy “pretending” attitude? The word “godliness” suddenly comes to mind. Godliness is a holy habit. It means changing little by little in life through Jesus Christ. It’s a decision to look back on myself at least once in the face of something that no one will know if we just let it go. It’s about living today a little more honestly than yesterday.

    Godliness is a spiritual work that feels the weight of God in life. It is confirming and expanding the weight of God who intervenes through a time of rest even in the face of slight losses and pride. Could it be that the Lord has allowed us today because He expects us to live a better life of piety than we did yesterday? It seems as if the Lord’s heart is pressing upon us, as if He wants us to live our lives that way.

    As believers, there are things we must ask and answer as we live our lives. I hope that we can decide to wrestle with the questions the Lord asks us in our daily lives, which are always similar, with a pious heart. I hope that we can make the decision to fill our lives with the heart of the Lord who wants us to choose piety in our ordinary daily lives. Thinking about it, it is faith again. It is constantly checking the amount of faith within me as I live.

    The practice of godliness can be like this. There are things in our lives that have passed but remain like scars. They may have occurred due to mistakes or injustice, but there are moments when I discover that I have grown a little as I try to overcome them. We cannot always live a godly life. There may be times when we pretend not to know, and times when we may be embarrassed, but I think that the traces of our struggle to return to godliness each time are the new knots of life centered around the heart that has decided to be godly.

    The power of godliness means the ability to meditate on God’s word and change our lives according to that word.
I hope that during Lent, as children of God and disciples of the Lord, we will have a precious time to yearn for the power of godliness that believes in and follows the love and power of the cross.
