    선택지가 더 많다는 것은 현재 경로에서 이탈할 가능성이 극대화된다는 뜻이다. 하나의 목표에 온전히 전념하는 것이야말로 목표 달성의 가능성을 급진적으로 끌어올리는 확실한 방법이다.

    오늘날은 과거 어느 때보다 선택지가 다양하다 선택지가 많은 것은 분명 환영할 일이다. 그런데 과유불급이라는 말처럼 선택지가 너무 많으면 문제가 생기기 쉽다. 기회들이 상충하면서 우리의 집중력과 주의력이 끊임없이 흩어진다. 따라서 선택한 다음에는 한우물만 파야 한다. 오롯이 집중하고 이것이 궤도에 올라 안정화될 때까지 다른 것에는 곁눈질도 하지 마라.

    그리고 완전히 집중하는 방법을 익히고 1년이든 3년이든 모든 에너지와 집중력을 쏟을 기한, 다른 말로 최종 결과를 달성할 기한을 구체적으로 정해야 한다. 임계점의 이르기 전에 포기해서는 안 된다.

     '1만 시간의 법칙'이라는 말을 들어보았을 것이다. 연구 결과에 따르면, 우리가 하나의 기술을 완벽히 숙달해서 전문가가 되기까지 대략 1만 시간이 걸린다. 특정 기술에 완벽히 통달해 전문가가 되는 것은 성공의 열쇠다. 단, 그것이 우리가 1만 시간을 투자하고 싶은 일이어야 한다. 무언가에 숙달하기 위해 노력한다면 반드시 자신이 사랑하는 무엇인가여야 한다.^[각주:1]
