시간의 가치(The value of time)

    최저 임금 노동자든 시간당 수십만 원을 받는 의사나 변호사든 우리 모두는 자신의 시간에 값을 매긴다. 우리는 각자 시간을 제공한 대가로 기꺼이 수용하는 액수가 있다. 또한 자신의 시간과 돈을 맞바꾸는 것은 물론이고 이런 교환으로 최대한 이득을 취하는 것에 깊이 몰두한다. 그리하여 자신의 시간이 진실로 얼마의 가치가 있는지 거의 생각하지 않는다.

    삶은 유한하다. 삶은 늘릴 수도 아껴 쓸 수도 없으며, 미래의 어느 날을 위해 따로 저장해 둘 수도 없다. 삶이 유한한 것은 사실이며 이는 인간의 숙명이다. 그러나 우리 세상에는 자원도 부도 기회도 무한하다. 그런데 유독 시간은 너무 부족하다. 이 아까운 시간을 그냥 흘려보낼 것인가? 이 아까운 시간을 남들이 시키는 대로 살며 보낼 것인가?

    쉼 없이 흘러가는 시간에 좀 더 주의를 기울이자. 우리가 시간을 어떻게 사용하는지에 대해 남들이 더는 왈가왈부하지 못하게 만들어야 한다. 이제부터는 무엇이 중요한지 우리 스스로 결정하자. 자신이 사랑하는 사람들과 함께하든, 열정을 추구하든, 멋진 인생 경험을 하든 다른 사람이 아닌 자신의 판단에 따르자. 우리 생애의 가치를 돈으로 책정할 수 없다는 사실을 반드시 마음 깊이 새겨야 한다.

    하지만 돈은 무한하다. 양적으로 보면 이 세상에서 부는 한계가 없다. 예전에는 금과 은같은 희소 자원을 척도로 부를 측정했지만, 오늘날의 부는 실체가 없다. 컴퓨터 화면이나 스마트폰에 찍히는 숫자일 뿐이다. 무에서 부를 창조할 수도 있다. 혹자들이 생각하는 것처럼 세상의 부는 제로섬 게임이 아니다. 부자가 되기 위해 우리가 다른 누군가의 파이를 뺏어올 필요가 없다는 말이다. 대신 우리가 직접 파이를 구우면 된다. 부는 세상에 무제한으로 존재하니까. 다시 말해 우리가 할 일은 세상에 널린 부를 우리의 삶으로 끌어들이는 것이다. ^[각주:1]

     Whether you’re a minimum wage worker or a doctor or lawyer who earns hundreds of thousands of dollars an hour, we all value our time. We each have a price we’re willing to accept for our time. We also tend to be so focused on trading our time for money that we rarely think about how much our time is really worth.

    But money is infinite. In quantitative terms, there is no limit to wealth in this world. In the past, wealth was measured in terms of scarce resources such as gold and silver, but today wealth has no substance. It is just numbers printed on a computer screen or a smartphone. We can also create wealth from nothing. The wealth of the world is not a zero-sum game as some people think. This means that we do not need to steal someone else's pie to become rich. Instead, we can bake our own pie. There is unlimited wealth in the world. In other words, our job is to attract the wealth that is abundant in the world into our lives.
