하나만 선택하라(Choose just one)

    최대한 명확하고 구체적인 결과를 상상하라. 목표를 구체적으로 결정하지 않으면 어떻게 될까? 첫째, 우리의 뇌는 다음 단계를 어떻게 시작해야 하는지에 관한 명확한 지침을 갖지 못한다. 또한 우리의 뇌는 우리가 취하는 행동들이 우리의 목표 달성에 도움이 되는지 측정할 수 있는 정확한 기준도 알지 못한다. 마지막으로 성공이 어떤 모습인지 세부적이고 구체적으로 결정하지 않았으니 목표를 달성하기 위한 로드맵을 수립하지 못할 가능성이 크다.

    최종 시한 안에 목표를 달성한다면 더할 나위 없다. 하지만 이것은 가능성이 높지 않을뿐더러 궁극적으로 보면 가장 중요한 요소도 아니다. 중요한 것은 최종 시간이 정해진 구체적이고 측정 가능한 행동 계획이 생겼다는 사실이다. 거듭 말하지만, 당신이 무엇을 원하는지 구체적이고 명확하게 결정해야 한다. 그러한 결정 없이는 목표를 달성할 수 있는 유의미한 행동을 시작하기 어렵다.

    최종 결과는 아주 구체적이어야 한다. 선택하고 모든 노력을 쏟기로 결정한 다음에는 다른 어디에도 눈길조차 주지 마라. 하나만 선택하라.

    기회의 옥석을 가리는 눈을 키우자. 시간의 투자수익률 다른 말로 시성비가 매우 높은 기회만 붙잡고 다른 모든 기회는 단호히 거부하라. 기회는 무한하지만 기회를 추구할 수 있는 인생은 단 1번뿐임을 명심하길 바란다.^[각주:1]

    Imagine the outcome as clearly and specifically as possible. What happens if you don’t make your goal specific? First, your brain doesn’t have a clear guideline for how to start the next step. It also doesn’t know the exact criteria by which you can measure whether the actions you take will help you achieve your goal. Finally, since you haven’t determined what success looks like in detail and concretely, you probably won’t have a roadmap for achieving your goal.

    If you can achieve your goal by the deadline, that’s great. But that’s not very likely, and ultimately, it’s not the most important factor. What’s important is that you have a specific, measurable action plan with a set deadline. Again, you need to be specific and clear about what you want. Without that, it’s hard to start taking meaningful action to achieve your goal.

    Your end result needs to be very specific. Once you’ve made your choice and decided to put all your effort into it, don’t even look anywhere else. Just choose one.

    Develop your eye for opportunity. In other words, grab only the opportunities that have a very high return on your investment of time, and firmly reject all others. Please keep in mind that opportunities are endless, but you only have one life to pursue them.
