포레: 피아노와 오케스트라를 위한 환상곡 Fantaisie for piano and orchestra, Op. 111

    포레(Gabriel Urbain Fauré, 1845 - 1924년)의 세련되고 고도로 개화된 음악은 프랑스 전통의 귀족적인 특질을 구현한다. 포레는 구노의 방식에 따라 노래를, 그리고 멘델스존과 쇼팽에게서 연유한 살롱용 피아노 소품들을 썼다. 기교적인 과시가 없는 서정적 선율이 변함없이 그의 기본적인 양식이었으며, 작은 규모가 항상 그의 취향에 맞았다.

    전체적으로 포레의 서정적이고 지속적으로 발전하는 선율의 양식과 명료한 짜임새의 선들이 인상주의와는 반대되었지만, 그의 화성 어법은 드뷔시에게 상당한 암시를 주었다. 또한 그의 직계 제자 라벨, 그리고 유명한 교사 나니아 불랑제를 통해 그 후의 수많은 작곡가에게 끼친 그의 영향은 20세기 음악에서 아주 중요한 요소가 되었다.

    Fauré's refined and highly developed music embodies the aristocratic character of the French tradition. Fauré wrote songs in the manner of Gounod and piano pieces for salons derived from Mendelssohn and Chopin. Lyrical melodies without technical display were his basic style, and small scales always suited his taste.

    As he reached maturity around 1885, these small forms began to be filled with a new language. The creative power of living, flexible melodies was supplemented by a renewal of harmony. Fauré was familiar with plainsong, and this seems to have been one of the sources of the modalities so prominent in his harmonic diction.

    Fauré is remembered not only for the beauty of his music. He embodied these ideals in an era when tradition, logic, moderation, and the poetry of pure musical form were not properly valued.

    Although Fauré's lyrical and continuously developing melodic style and clear-textured lines were generally opposed to Impressionism, his harmonic language had considerable implications for Debussy. His influence on many later composers, through his immediate pupil Ravel and the famous teacher Narnia Boulanger, was a major factor in 20th-century music.
