다시 그은 선(A redrawn line)

한 부대가 완전히 포위되었다.
병력과 무기의 열세로 도저히 이길 수가 없는
사면초가의 상황이었다.
적은 비참한 죽음을 당하지 말고 항복할 것을 권했지만
작전상 중요한 지역이라 쉽게 포기할 수가 없었다.
그렇다고 지원병을 기대할 수도 없는 형편이었다.

대장은 끝까지 싸우겠다고 말했다.
그리고 땅에 금을 그어놓고 말했다.
“나는 끝까지 싸우겠다.
그러나 강요하지는 않겠다.
항복해도 좋다.
다만 나와 끝까지 싸울 사람만
이 선을 건너와서 내 편에 서라”

병사들은 한 명씩 건너오기 시작했고
결국 한 병사만을 제외하고는 모두 싸우겠다고 건너왔다.
그때 넘어오지 않은 한 병사가 말했다.
“대장님,저는 다리를 다쳐 걸을 수 가 없습니다.
죄송하지만 금을 제 뒤쪽으로 그어주십시오”
사기가 오른 그들은 최선을 다해 그곳을 지켰고
조국에 승리를 안겨주었다.

모두가 힘들 때는 오히려 가장 힘든 사람이
모두에게 용기를 주기도 한다.
태초에 하나님은 남을 위해 살 수 없는 사람이
한 사람도 없도록 세상을 창조하셨다.
