흔들림 없는 변화의 시작(The beginning of unshakable change)

    목적의식은 개인적 강인함, 즉 자신의 신념을 굳게 믿고 그것을 계속 지켜 나갈 수 있는 힘의 궁극적 원천이다. 탁월한 성과를 내려면 자신에게 무엇이 중요한지 알고, 매일 그것과 발맞추어 행동해야 한다. 명확한 목적의식을 가지면 인생이 더욱 또렷이 보이고, 그러면 방향에 대한 확신이 생기며, 이것은 또다시 더 빠른 의사결정으로 이어진다. 의사결정의 속도가 빨라지면 누구보다도 빠른 선택이 가능해져 최고의 선택지를 갖게 될 수 있다. 그리고 최고의 선택지를 갖게 되면 최고의 경험을 할 기회가 생긴다. 이것이 바로 어디로 갈지 잘 알면 인생이 제공하는 최고의 결과물과 경험을 누릴 수 있게 되는 이유다.

    목적의식은 또한 일이 잘 풀리지 않을 때에도 도움이 된다. 때로 살기가 힘들어지고 그 일을 피해 돌아갈 길을 찾기 힘들 때가 있다. 높은 목표를 가지고 살다 보면 자기 나름의 힘든 시기를 겪을 수밖에 없다. 우리 모두가 이런 경험을 한다. 그러나 어떤 일을 할 때 잘 안 풀리더라도 스스로 그 이유를 제대로 알고 있다면 더욱더 노력할 수 있는 동기와 의지가 생긴다. 남다른 성과를 만들어 내기 위해서는 성공할 때까지 한 가지 일에 집중하는 것이 가장 기본적인 조건이다.

    목적의식은 스스로 정한 길에서 벗어나지 않게 하는 강력한 접착제와 같은 역할을 한다. 자신이 하는 일이 목적의식에 부합할 때 삶은 리듬을 타듯 수월하게 움직일 것이고, 발걸음은 머릿속과 가슴속에서 들려오는 소리와 일치하게 될 것이다.
