리허설의 목적(The purpose of a rehearsal)

    연주자들이 함께 숨을 쉬고, 자신이 연주하는 음들의 울림이 다른 사람의 파트에 녹아들어 가는 것을 들어야 한다. 악절과 악절 사이에 간극이 마련되도록 해야 한다. 이것이 지휘자가 리허설에서 할 일이다. 지휘자가 본공연에서 작품을 다르게 가겠다고 해도 연주자들이 당황하지 않고 편하게 따라갈 수 있도록 준비시키는 것, 이것이 리허설의 목적이다.

 

 

    나는 음악회에서 음악과 함께 어울려 노는 것이 나의 일이었으면 한다. 작품이 어떻게 진행되는지 연주자들이 확실히 알아서 내가 팔을 내 마음대로 흔들어도 음악이 제대로 연주되는 것이다. 그러려면 연주를 시작하기 전에 그들이 음악의 구조를 몸으로 느끼고 작품의 퍼즐을 어떻게 맞추어야 할지 파악하고 있어야 한다. 그래야 내가 정해진 한계 내에서 연주에 이런저런 변화를 주고 몸짓으로 연주자들을 깜짝 놀라게 할 수 있다.

 

 

    연주자들은 클라이맥스에서 아첼레란도가 작품의 구조와 관련하여 어떤 식으로 작용하는지는 알지만, 내가 구조 안에서 어떤 식의 해석을 보여줄지 정확히는 모른다. 그래서 내가 놀 수 있는 여지가 생긴다. 하지만 사람들에게 친숙한 레퍼토리를 연주할 때는 천중에게 놀라움을 안길 수 있는 여지가 점차 줄어들고 있다는 것은 인정해야 한다.^[각주:1]

    The performers must breathe together and listen to the echoes of the notes they play melt into someone else's part. Make sure there is a gap between the syllables. This is what a conductor will do in rehearsal. This is the purpose of the rehearsal, preparing the performers to follow comfortably without panicking even if the conductor wants to go differently in the main performance.

    I hope it is my job to play with music at a concert. The performers know how the work works, so even if I shake my arms, the music is played properly. To do that, before starting to play, they must feel the structure of the music with their bodies and understand how to fit the puzzle of the work. That way, I can make changes to the performance within the set limits and surprise the performers with gestures.

    The performers know how Acellando works in relation to the structure of the work at the climax, but they don't know exactly how I'll interpret it within the structure. So I have room for play. However, it must be acknowledged that there is gradually less room to surprise the audience when playing a repertoire that is familiar to people.
