결정이 다른 이유(The reason for the difference in the decision)

죽을 파는 두 가게가 있었다.
두 집 모두 장사가 잘 되었지만
저녁때 계산해 보면 언제나 왼쪽 집이
오른쪽 집보다 수입이 많았다.
오른쪽 집에서는 죽을 줄 때 이렇게 말했다.
"손님, 달걀을 넣을까요?"

그러면 추가 금액을 내고 넣는 사람도 있고
넣지 않는 사람도 있었다.
대략 반반 정도였다.

반면 왼쪽 가게 종업원은 이렇게 물었다.
"달걀을 하나만 넣을까요? 두 개를 넣을까요?"
좋아하는 사람은 두 개를 넣었고
그렇지 않은 경우엔 하나만 넣었다.
간혹 넣지 않겠다는 사람도 있었지만 그리 많지 않았다.

결과적으로 하루 동안 왼쪽 가게는 오른쪽 가게보다
훨씬 많은 달걀을 팔 수 있었다.
상대에게 선택의 여지를 줄 때는 질문이 중요하다.
처음 얻은 정보가 다르면 결정도 다를 수밖에 없기 때문이다.
