화석연료란?(What Is Fossil Fuel?)

 

"화석연료라니, 삼엽충, 암모나이트 같은 화석으로 만든 연료인가요?"
라고 의문을 가지진 않았나요? 반은 맞고, 반은 아니라고 할 수 있어요.

화석연료란, 고생물의 유해가 지하에 매장되어 생성된 자원들의 통칭을 말해요. 다른 말로 '화석에너지'라고도 한답니다.

즉, 동식물의 유해들이 지하에서 오랜 세월에 걸쳐서 변화된 물질을 화석연료라고 해요. 우리가 볼 수 있는 삼엽충이나 암모나이트 등의 화석은 모습이 보존되어 지상으로 꺼내어진 화석이죠. 하지만 여기서 말하는 화석연료는 지하에서 모습이 변화되어 석유나 석탄 등의 자원으로 변화된 물질을 뜻한답니다.

화석연료는 현재까지 인류가 이용하고 있는 중요한 에너지 자원이에요. 대표적으로 석탄·석유·천연가스가 있어요.

■ 석유

그중에서도 석유는 가장 중요한 자원으로 뽑혀요. 자동차나 항공기, 선박 등 운송수단의 동력원이 될 뿐 아니라, 화력발전 및 석유화학공업, 각종 공업 등의 원료가 되기 때문이에요.

■ 석탄

석탄은 석유에 비해 매장량도 많고 비교적 넓은 지역들에 걸쳐 분포되어 있어서 석유에 비해 값이 싼 편이고, 이로 인해 난방, 공업원료 및 동력자원 등으로 폭넓게 이용되고 있어요.

■ 천연가스

천연가스는 주로 석유가 채취되는 유전에서 석유와 함께 얻을 수 있는 자원으로, 탄화수소로 이루어진 기체 상태의 가스를 말해요. 석탄·석유에 비해 대기오염 물질이 적어 현대엔 가정용 난방 연료로 많이 쓰이며, 발전용 및 산업용으로도 많이 사용되고 있어요.

오늘날 화석연료로 인한 지구온난화가 세계적으로 문제가 되고 있어요. 특히 석탄과 석 유는 연소과정에서 오염 물질들을 다량으로 배출해요.

■ Natural gas

Natural gas refers to a gaseous gas composed of hydrocarbons as a resource that can be obtained with oil from an oil field, where it is mainly collected. Since there are fewer air pollutants than coal and oil, it is now widely used as a home heating fuel and is also widely used for power generation and industrial use.

Today, global warming caused by fossil fuels is a global problem. In particular, coal and oil emit large amounts of pollutants during the combustion process.
