예술가의 작업(Work of Artist)
예술품은 오로지 예술가가 손에 끌을 들고 돌을 쪼아 낼 때에만, 용광로를 뜨겁게 달구고 놋물을 쏟아 내야만, 진흙 뭉치를 들어 물레를 돌려야만, 붓이나 나이프를 잡고 물감을 이리저리 칠해야만, 조각칼이나 산(酸)을 가지고 동판에 홈을 파야만, 언어의 창고에서 단어를 특별한 순서로 선택할 때에만, 연주하는 악기가 낼 수 있는 엄청나게 다양한 소리들 가운데서 단지 몇 가지를 일정한 순서로 뽑아낼 때메만, 무한한 사건의 상태들 가운데서 이야기를 만들기 위해 단지 몇 가지를 택했을 때에만 만들어진다.
예술가의 기본은 그가 돌과 놋, 진흙, 물감, 산(酸)과 동판, 단어들, 소리와 악기, 사건의 상황을 다루는 작업자라는 것이다. 그는 세계라는 무대의 구체적인 재료의 일부에 질서를 부과한다. 그는 진흙을 '인간화'한다. 그는 놋에 대해 꿰고 있다(master). 그는 세계라는 영역을 구성하는 엄청나게 다양한 추상적 실재들로부터 질서가 지워진 소수의 것을 뽑아낸다. 그는 소리를 '인간화'하고 단어를 자유롭게 구사한다(master).
예술가는 자신이 선택한 매체(medium)를 가지고 작업을 하면서 서서히 그 매체의 특성을 알게 된다. 그는 매체를 가지고 어떤 것을 할 수 있고 어떤 것을 할 수 없으며, 어떤 것을 쉽게 할 수 있지만 어떤 일은 아주 어렵사리 해 낼 수 있다는 것을 배운다. 그는 그것을 가지고 할 수 있는 새로운 일, 즉 결코 누구도 하지 않았던 것들을 발견하기도 한다.

An artwork is created only when an artist pokes a stone with a chisel in his hand, when he must heat the furnace and pour out the stream, must be turned around with a ball of mud, must be grabbed by a brush or a knife and painted around, must be grooved into a copper plate with a carving knife or acid, must be made only when the playing instrument selects words in a particular order in the language depot, but only when he chooses to make a story out of the enormous variety of sounds that the playing instrument can make in a certain order.
The basis of an artist is that he is a worker who deals with stones and brass, mud, paint, acid and copper plates, words, sounds and instruments, and situations of events. He learns that he can do something with the medium, that he cannot do something, that he can do something easily, but that some things can be done very difficult. The artist learns and discovers the various ways he uses the materials he handles in the process of reaching his goals. He also learns which of the methods are good and bad. He learns all of these because the materials he handles are not infinitely diverse. Materials have their own properties. There are laws governing them.
