말러 교향곡 제6번 피날레(Mahler Symphony No. 6 Finale)
말러의 교향곡 악장 가운데 가장 길고 복잡하고 극적인 6번의 피날레.
마지막 악장은 파국의 음악적 우주를 나아가는 거대한 여행과도 같아서 교향곡의 마지막 부분이 일그러진 프리즘에 비쳐 뒤틀리게 보인다.
앞선 악장들에 나왔던 선율과 성격이 여기서 강조되고 변용되어 35분에 달하는 악장의 웅장한 클라이맥스에 이르면 말러의 음악적 주인공이 높이 떠받들어진다. 그러다가 말러는 이 불쌍한 주인공을 탈출구가 없는 고통스러운 음악적 회오리바람 속으로 몰아넣는다.
교향곡의 맨 마지막에 가서 악장 처음에 나왔던, 소용돌이처럼 돌면서 몽환적으로 감싸는 풍경이 마지막으로 다시 등장하지만, 주인공은 교향곡 전체를 관통하는 숙명적인 리듬의 반복과 두 명의 팀파니 주자의 해머 소리와 현악의 고개 숙인 피치카토 음형에 묻히고 만다.
연주는 말할 것도 없고 듣고 있기 조차 힘든 음악이다. 게다가 마지막 악장이 시작하기도 전에 이미 말러의 밀도 높은 음악이 거의 한 시간에 걸쳐 진행되었기 때문에 모든 음악가들, 특히 목관과 금관 주자들에게 체력적인 문제가 대두된다.
말러의 6번 피날레를 마치면서 감정적인 반응을 보이지 않기란 불가능하다. 표현뿐만 아니라 소리 자체가 사람을 멍하게 만든다. 연주자들은 음악에 내재된 엄청난 긴장감을 표출해야 한다. 다들 말러의 감정적인 심연을 만들어내고 말러의 공포에 맞닥뜨려야 한다.
오케스트라를 위해 작곡된 음악 가운데 가장 경이롭고 충만한 작품이 아닐까 싶다. 지친다 싶은 기분이 들면 이 악장은 완전히 무아지경에 빠져 연주하는 것이 가장 좋다. 처음부터 끝까지 음악에 취해 연주하는 거다. 그러면 지친다는 생각을 잊을 수 있다.

The longest, most complex and dramatic finale of Mahler's symphony movement.
The last movement is like a huge journey into the musical universe of the catastrophe, so the last part of the symphony looks distorted by a distorted prism.
The melody and character of the previous movements are emphasized and transformed here, and Mahler's musical protagonist is highly supported when it reaches the grand climax of the 35-minute movement. Mahler then drives this poor protagonist into a painful musical whirlwind with no way out.
At the end of the symphony, the scene that first appeared in the movement and wrapped like a whirlpool reemerges, but the main song is buried in the repetition of the fateful rhythm that runs through the entire symphony, the sound of the hammer of two timpani runners and the pitchkato sound, which is the bow of the string.
It's music that's hard to even listen to, let alone play. Furthermore, since Mahler's dense music already lasted almost an hour before the last movement began, physical problems arise for all musicians, especially woodwinds and brass players.
It is impossible not to show emotional reactions when finishing Mahler's 6th finale. Not only expression but also sound itself makes one feel blank. Performers must express tremendous tension inherent in music. Everyone must create Mahler's emotional abyss and confront Mahler's fear.
I think it is the most marvelous and filling piece of music composed for the orchestra. If you feel tired, it is best to play this movement in a trance. You are immersed in music from start to finish. Then, you will forget that you are tired.
