유정유일(惟精惟一)의 정신 Spirit of 惟精惟一

《서경(書經)》의 <대우모(大禹謨)>에서 유래한 말이다.

중국 고대의 성인 요임금은 순임금에게 왕위를 물려주면서 "진실로 그 가운데를 잡으라.(允執厥中 윤집궐중)"라고 했고, 순임금은 다시 우임금에게 왕위를 물려주면서 여기에 열두 자를 더하여 "욕심 섞인 인간의 마음은 위태롭기 쉽고 타고난 도덕심은 잘 드러나지 않으니 오직 정성스럽게 하고 흔들림 없이 해서 진실로 그 가운데를 잡으라.(人心惟危 道心惟微 惟精惟一 允執厥中 인심유위 도심유미 유정유일 윤집궐중)"라고 하였다.

곧 사람의 마음은 이기적이어서 도를 지키려고 해도 자칫하면 도에 어긋나게 되므로 위태롭고, 도를 지키려는 마음은 사람의 마음이 약하기 때문에 희미해지기 쉬우므로 정신을 모으고 통일하여야만 도를 따를 수 있다는 것이다.

곧 정성스럽게 하고 흔들림 없이 하는 것, 즉 '유정유일의 정신' 이야말로 도덕심과 인간의 욕구를 모두 충족시키는 방법이라고 본 것이다.

(人心惟危 道心惟微 惟精惟一 允執厥中 인심유위 도심유미 유정유일 윤집궐중 ) "

In other words, a person's mind is selfish and even if he tries to keep the Tao, it is dangerous because it goes against the Tao, and the mind to keep the Tao is easily faded because the human mind is weak, so he can follow Tao only when he gathers and unifies.

In other words, he saw that doing it carefully and without shaking, that is, the "Spirit of 惟精惟一," is a way to satisfy both morality and human needs.
