🎼 Kipling의 「If—」를 음악으로 만들다

 

루드야드 키플링의 시 「If—」는 오래전부터 좋아하던 작품이다. 자기 수양, 인내, 인간적 성숙에 대한 메시지가 담겨 있고, 마지막 구절 “you’ll be a Man, my son”은 늘 마음을 울린다.

이번에 이 시를 바탕으로 풀 오케스트라와 남성 솔로 보컬로 구성된 음악을 만들었다. 단순한 낭송이 아니라, 신화적이고 장엄한 분위기의 서사적 음악으로 풀어내고 싶었다.

이 곡은 마에스트로 최승원 형님께 헌정하는 마음으로 제작했다. 형님은 나의 대학 동기이자, 1993년 메트로폴리탄 오페라 콩쿨 우승자다. 그분의 음악은 늘 깊은 울림을 주었고, 이 시의 메시지를 형님의 예술성과 연결하고 싶었다.

작곡은 Suno AI를 활용했고, 편성은 2관 편성의 풀 오케스트라에 하프, 팀파니, 타악기를 포함했다. 보컬은 남성 솔로로, 마치 신화 속 인물이 신의 메시지를 전하는 듯한 톤을 의도했다.

같은 구성으로 서로 다른 느낌의 두 가지 버전을 만들었다. 하나는 힘차고 영웅적인 분위기, 다른 하나는 장엄하고 묵직한 내면의 울림을 담고 있다.
가사는 시 원문을 기반으로 하되, 후렴을 추가해 음악적 구조를 강화했다.
